Crew Management

With a pool of 7,000 seafarers worldwide and a network of wholly owned training centres, Wallem provides skilled and professional crew in all roles to meet the needs of your trade and fleet. We take pride in our crew – and they, in turn, take pride in looking after your vessels.

Safety & quality

Safety and quality go hand in hand and permeate everything we do. In addition to our ‘Target Zero’ vision for zero injuries, zero spills and zero accidents, we have developed a culture of continuous improvement and a compliance roadmap towards operational excellence.

Competence & training

Recognising that a competent crew is essential to safe and efficient vessel operations, Wallem takes training seriously. Our network of training centres ensures crew are equipped with technical proficiency, understand the commercial realities of vessel operations, and stay focused on compliance and safety. We also train them in the soft skills required to run ships in today's high-pressure environment.

Performance management

Maintaining high levels of competence requires a comprehensive performance management programme. Wallem continually appraises its seafarers, carries out skill-gap analyses and tracks performance. We also harness the latest technology to ensure these processes are as seamless and transparent as possible.

Empowerment & ownership

We want our crew to care about your ships as much as you do. Through a culture of empowerment built on engagement and responsibility, Wallem encourages seafarers to take ownership of – and pride in – their work. Our e-learning platform offers opportunities for ongoing self-improvement, which is accessible anywhere at any time.

Crew retention

Given the importance of consistency in maintaining excellence, Wallem encourages loyalty from its seafarers, which is reflected in its industry-leading 88% crew retention rate. To keep morale high, we are improving the quality of life at sea through enhanced onboard internet access, a greater variety of catering options and the introduction of wellness and mental health awareness programmes.

Recruitment & development

Wallem recruits seafarers from around the globe including from major crewing centres such as India, the Philippines and Ukraine. We are the largest provider of Chinese crew to international shipowners and the only foreign company licensed to recruit, train and employ Chinese seafarers directly.

Diversity & Inclusion

Our belief that diversity is a strength is embodied in our inclusive employment policy and commitment to equal opportunities. Wallem is one of the leading employers of women seafarers. As a separate initiative, Women of Wallem (WoW) is a non-profit organisation that unites the mothers, wives and girlfriends of Wallem seafarers.
