We catch up with Second Officer Jonalyn Sabornido, the cover star of True North magazine issue 3 2017, to find out about her career path, what she misses from home and her future ambitions:
When did you join Wallem and at what rank?
I joined my first Wallem vessel (a tanker) in 2013 as a Deck Cadet.
What ship are you currently sailing on?
I am currently sailing on the M.T Tofteviken
What rank are you sailing at?
Second Officer.
What do you like best about Wallem?
I would say the company’s overall reputation drew me in. I’ve been in shipping for almost 5 years and Wallem has always been an industry leader in innovation and high safety standards. My friends always raved about the atmosphere of professionalism – demanding excellence while promoting and enabling a healthy and positive work environment. Wallem helps me to live my dreams – good wages, opportunities to travel…in short get paid to see the world!
What do you miss most about home?
First and foremost I miss my family so much. Secondly, I miss food from the Philippines! I’m dying for some of my foods from home – some isaw, kwek-kwek, kikiam, balut, and jolly spaghetti. Sometimes I even miss the noise of Manila!
If you weren’t a seafarer, what would you like to be?
If I wasn’t a seafarer, I’d probably be a flight attendant – I would be able to fly around the world, explore new places and get to meet new cultures and improve my communication skills – almost the same benefits as I am getting now. But I have no regrets and am very happy being a seafarer.
What are your hobbies / interests?
I love playing badminton, reading books and scrolling on Instagram.
What are your ambitions for the future?
To be a Captain.
