Celebrating 25 years of growth
06 Mar 2010

At a party on Saturday 06 March for seafarers, their families, staff and clients, Wallem Shipmanagement (India) Pvt Ltd celebrated 25 years of growth in India, marking quarter of a century in the sub continent.

Senior management from the Wallem Group in Hong Kong joined the managers of each of the Indian offices and training centres in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chandigargh and Chennai at the event.

Wallem has been recruiting seafarers from India since the early 1970s, but it was not until 1985 that Wallem established a formal presence in Mumbai. It was known then as Wilco Shipmanagement & Travels, Pvt Ltd, until 2009 when the name changed to Wallem Shipmanagement (India) Pvt Ltd.

In 1987, the Delhi office was established, and was followed in 1996 by Kolkata, Chennai in 1997, and most recently the office in Chandigargh in 2008.

Today, the Wallem offices in India provide almost 70 per cent of the crew to Wallem’s 320-strong managed fleet.

Training has been an important feature of Wallem’s presence in India, providing world-class facilities for seafarers to improve their skills and knowledge to grow their own careers.

In 1994, Wallem was one of the first shipping companies to establish a training centre in Mumbai for their seafarers – Wallem Maritime Training Centre. With increasing demand, the Training Centre was expanded and relocated to Crescent Towers in 2004.

When it first opened, the training centre was offering about 30 courses, and today that has increased to more than 40. The Mumbai Training Centre is one of the few in the city which is equipped with state of the art simulators, both navigational as well as engineering.

Since the Training Centre opened in 1994, it has awarded more than 17,700 certificates to seafarers who have completed courses.

The offices in Kolkata, Chennai, Chandigargh and Delhi also offer training courses to seafarers, providing an easily accessible location for improving their skills and knowledge without extended travel times.

The Chennai office and training centre opened new larger premises on 01 March 2010, improving the services available to seafarers living in the southern region of India. It is now three times larger, half of which is dedicated to training in the 17 courses available.

The next generation of Indian seafarers is important for Wallem’s growth, and each year exceptional cadets are recognised with awards presented at maritime training facilities. These include trophies and a cash prize of Rs.10,000.00 for the Best All Round Pre-Sea Cadet of the Year at Tolani Maritime Institute, TS Rahaman, and the International Maritime Institute.

Every year Wallem sponsors cadets at various institutes in India, providing onboard training positions. In 2009, 30 Wallem Cadets from India graduated their shore-based training, and will commence their onboard training in 2010 on Wallem-managed ships.

At the anniversary celebration on 06 March, Captain Navin Passey, Wallem Shipmanagement (India) Managing Director announced the Wallem Foundation. The Foundation will be established as a welfare fund for families and children of Wallem seafarers in India.

The Wallem Foundation will offer scholarships, sponsorships to gifted children who excel in sports, provide employment support services, support to families of deceased former employees, and support for deserving local environmental causes.

Still in its formative stages, the Wallem Foundation is envisioned as a long-term legacy for Wallem Shipmanagement, which will grow to encompass all of the key seafaring nations where Wallem recruits crew members.
