In
1897, Haakon Wallem, a young Norwegian shipbroker,
established himself in the Far East. He set up Wallem
& Co in 1903 in Shanghai and by 1908 he owned
and managed ships. In 1949 Wallem's headquarters moved
to Hong Kong, where we are still today.
Wallem were at the basis of the Hong Kong ship owning
boom in the Fifties, at times being shipowners, but
always being ship brokers, shipping agents and, since
1971, third party ship managers.
We started to develop management systems early on,
driven by high office costs in Hong Kong and by an
expanding business network which needs to be well
connected. 6000 people now work on Wallem-managed
ships and another 600 people work in close to 50 Wallem
offices in 18 countries around the world.
Our ship management customers have full on-line access
to the procurement, accounting and personnel records
for their ships.
We are still shipping agents all over Asia, we are
air cargo agents in Malaysia, Thailand and Manila,
we are shipbrokers in Qingdao, Hong Kong, Taipei and
Hamburg, we develop maritime software in our own company
in The Philippines and we are top quality ship managers.
The largest three tankers ever built were in full
technical management with Wallem Ship Management until
they were taken out of operation due to impending
Marpol regulations.
We lead in successful shipping joint ventures in China:
the Pen-Wallem Agency network in all major Chinese
ports, Cosco Wallem Ship Management and Wallem Maritime
Training Center in Qingdao. |
